The Highland Council Plaswood Platform Case Study

Tue 30 January 2007

It was decided to upgrade the paths and put in the platform which would be friendly for all users including wheelchair users. On leaning about Plaswood recycled plastic furniture during investigations of platform designs and materials I decided that this material would allow an easy to construct and low maintenance platform. Maintenance is always an issue with time constraints and cost so where possible I use the simplest designs and most robust materials for best value. Although Plaswood is more expensive than normal wood it does give confidence in long term lasting and since the platform was installed it has required no work on it since so overall good value. Another aspect is in damp locations such as ponds wood can get algae growing on it making it more slippy but with Plaswood any algae growth can be easily cleaned off.

Unfortunately it looks likely that I won’t be using this site in future due to a lack of funding from the site owner. My plan is to unscrew the platform and relocate it to another pond which is something that would be too difficult with a wooden structure.

I have since used the material for benches and have provided

Plaswood

for other platforms on Forestry Commission land constructed by their staff to good effect.
