Local company gives green gift

Sat 24 January 2009

To help local children appreciate firsthand the benefits of recycling, an eco-conscious business has given a unique gift to a Gloucestershire school.

bpi.recycled products, the largest recycler of waste polythene in Europe and an organisation with a site in Stroud employing 70 people, donated a

activity table to Christ Church C of E Primary School in Chalford. The gift was a reward for taking part in Gloucestershire County Council’s ‘Zero Waste Challenge Week’.

Part of the Gloucestershire Waste Partnership, the Council runs a special waste education programme for schools, focusing on the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). The aim is to not only show children how their behaviour can have a direct impact on the environment, but also to encourage them to become committed recyclers in the future.

bpi.recycled products was happy to donate a prize due to the highly relevant nature of its products. Every year, the business takes some 70,000 tonnes of waste, including used silage balewrap and pallet packaging, and gives it a new lease of life as items such as refuse sacks, recycled plastic furniture, street signs and decking.

Plaswood's recycled plastic furniture offers all the aesthetics of wood but with none of the associated maintenance requirements thanks to their production from 100% recycled polythene. They can also be recycled again and again, keeping reusable polythene in circulation and out of landfill.

Speaking of the donation, Kim Homer,

Plaswood

Sales Manager at bpi.recycled products said: “bpi.recycled products and all of the businesses that make up our parent company, BPI - British Polythene Industries - plc have long been committed to helping people to enjoy polythene’s many advantages and in a way that involves little or no environmental impact.

“Part of this entails a process of education and so we are only to happy to take part in an initiative which helps to raise awareness of some of polythene’s green benefits, such as its recyclability which can minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill.”

Kate Cole, Waste Minimisation and Recycling Officer at Recycle for Gloucestershire Schools, added: “bpi.recycled products continued support of Recycle for Gloucestershire Schools is greatly appreciated. It’s a testament to their commitment to the local community and to the wider environment.”
