Putting ‘has bins’ back to work

Tue 12 January

Fancy doing something out of the ordinary for the environment? Then Visqueen Building Products could have the ideal solution.

The eco-focused business, which already offers a number of greener solutions to the building and related trades, has begun using an unusual type of ‘raw material’ to create its Plaswood range of recycled plastic landscaping products. Old and unwanted wheelie bins.

The Plaswood range – which includes everything from outdoor furniture, fencing and decking through to signage, bollards, barriers, access ramps, walkways and even somewhat ironically, new bins – provides all the aesthetics of wood but with none of the associated maintenance requirements.

The need for laborious and routine tasks such as regular painting and rot proofing is completely avoided as Plaswood products are actually made entirely from plastic waste.

As well as old wheelie bins, other types of scrap commonly used in their production include waste packaging, waste agricultural balewrap and used horticultural films. The important part played by Plaswood products in diverting waste from landfill and the fact that they can be recycled again and again has been repeatedly recognised with numerous green awards.

As part of its latest initiative, Visqueen Building Products is helping to take old bins and recycling boxes off the hands of local authorities up and down the UK before reprocessing them at a network of UK recycling plants.

The firm’s commitment to only ever using UK waste reprocessed at UK facilities not only ensures Plaswood products help to reduce landfill but also gives them a carbon footprint much smaller than most 100% recycled plastic street furniture which is typically produced overseas.

Commenting on the ‘has bin’ recycling, Cameron Yates, Marketing Manager from Visqueen Building Products, said: “The use of plastic is the subject of much debate in today’s environmentally aware world and not least because there’s a perception that it’s difficult to dispose of and so destined to spend millennia in landfill. What the majority of people don’t realise however is that many types of plastic are now infinitely recyclable. "

Visqueen Building Products has long been at the forefront of this remanufacturing and offers products ranging from damp proof membranes to landscaping materials, all made from 100% recycled plastic waste.

“As part of our commitment to finding new and innovative ways of offering customers greener solutions, we continually look for new products and new materials we can employ as feedstock. The use of old wheelie bins is just the latest example of this.”
